the 1970's
february 24, 1970 : npr is launched.
october 1970 : pbs commences broadcasting. both pbs and npr spring from the public broadcasting act of 1967.
may 3, 1971 : 'all things considered' debuts.
january 5, 1976 : the macneil/lehrer report, formerly the macneil report, premieres.

the 1980's
march 24, 1980 : 'nightline' w/ ted koppel debuts. it represents a significant extension in news coverage, beyond the nightly broadcast and special reports.
june 1, 1980 : cnn is launched.
may 10, 1982 : wabc-am switches its format from top 40 to talk. wabc later becomes the flagship station for the two most popular talk show hosts in the country, rush limbaugh and sean hannity.
august 1, 1988 : 'the rush limbaugh show' is syndicated nationally.

the 1990's
july 15, 1996 : msnbc is launched.
july 22, 1996 : 'the daily show,' w/ craig kilborn as host, debuts.
october 7, 1996 : the fox news channel is launched; 'hannity & colmes' and 'the o'reilly report' (changed to 'the o'reilly factor' in 1998) make their premiere.
january 15, 1997 : 'hardball' w/ chris matthews, formerly 'politics,' debuts on cnbc; it moves to msnbc on november 8, 1999.
jaunary 11, 1999 : jon stewart becomes the host of 'the daily show.'

the 2000's
january 17, 2000 : 'the savage nation' w/ michael savage is syndicated.
october 2000 : tucker carlson co-hosts 'the spin room' on cnn before quickly moving on to 'crossfire.'
september 10, 2001 : 'the sean hannity show' is syndicated.
march 31, 2003 : 'countdown' w/ keith olbermann and 'scarborough country' w/ joe scarborough make their bows.
may 12, 2003 : 'dayside' w/ linda vester makes its debut.
march 31,2004 : air america radio is launched. 'the al franken show' and 'the majority report' w/ janeane garofalo and sam seder premiere; 'the randi rhodes show,' on the air in south florida since 1994, gains a nationwide audience.
january 17, 2005 : 'springer on the radio' w/ jerry springer hits the air nationally.
june 13, 2005 : tucker carlson reappears on msnbc's 'the situation.'
